The most notorious among the
lost Africans living in the new world are the ones that have settled in
North America, especially in the United States of America. It is
generally argued that these bunch are the ones who have lost the most of
the originality of their African culture, like in food, spirituality or
otherwise. But to their true credit, these group of Africans have also
excelled in other ways that their siblings in other parts of the world
can not help but be envious of. That is to say that the great successes
achieved by Africans in North America in areas of science, music,
entertainment and sports are unequaled anywhere else in the world.
For a long time, with African countries being ruled to ruins by failed kings, Generals and presidents, the |
blacks of North
America had been brainwashed to distant themselves from Africa. How
ironical, for the financial assistance that most African countries need
for their developement, could easily be procured from this
sector.
In recent years however, black people in North America have begun to rise up to certain challenges as things affect black people in Africa. The black people in the United States of America have fought fiercly to defeat apartheid in South Africa, and elevate Nelson Mandela from prisoner to president. They did not stop at that. They went as far as to invest their money, time and expertise to help South Africa survive past apartheid. That is the kind of crucial help that African countries need when developed countries only helped Africa "with strings attached". Could you imagine Snoop Dog pledging ten percent of his royalties to grass roots projects in Africa, and following it up year after year. Not only Snoop Dog. Imagine Prince, Janet jackson, Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, Denzel Washington, Wesley Snipes, Ice Tea, Will Smith, Beyonce, and a host of other successful African Americans, in the United States of America. |
The Immigrants There are a new breed of Africans who have volunteered to migrate to North America, pitch in their tents and begin to make a new living there. In fact, given the opportunity these days, most Africans will prefer to migrate and live in North America, instead of in Africa, accepting any limitations, and, or, privileges, in one kind of "new slavery" or another. According to Dozie Elonu, a Nigerian, and successful businessman now living in Houston, Texas, the new Africans did not come here with the intention to settle in North America. "We came to go to school, and to finally go back home and work in our respective countries. But opportunities in our countries disintegrated as we were preparing to go back home, so we had no choice but to remain in North America and make our new homes and families". Now, the concentration of all these Africans are visible in North American cities like New York, Houston, Atlanta, Chicago, Toronto, Montreal or Vancouver. There they thrive, sometimes in their own communities, or mixed up with the rest of the cultures. |
