NEGRO
YANGA |
This Roots And Wisdom cd was released in 2007
as a tribute to EL NEGRO YANGA, founder of the first black town in the
Americas to become free from slavery. The town is named YANGA, VERACRUZ,
about halfway between Cordoba and the Port of Veracruz in Mexico.
Yanga is one of the homes of black people in Mexico even though you barely
see a black man or woman there these days. They have mostly migrated to
the U.S. or breeded out. By accident or destiny, Mr. Yanga's name is also well known and used in Nigerian pidgeon English to describe people who are "too proud of themselves". "You de make yanga!" people will say. African Djembe and hand drumer Owen Towles
participated strongly in this recording both as a player and engineer. |

Before I came to know Mexico well, I thought that there were no black Mexicans. I have since visited "La Costa Chica" of Oaxaca and Guererro, and now I sing about the first black town in the Americas to become free from slavery, YANGA, VERACRUZ.
