Roots And Wisdom music celebrates:

"Before I came to know Mexico well, I thought that there were no black Mexicans. I have since visited "La Costa Chica" of Oaxaca and Guererro, and now I sing about the first black town in the Americas to become free from slavery,
called YANGA, VERACRUZ".

This Roots And Wisdom CD was released in 2007 as a tribute to an old Mexican slave town. After founding an African and Mayan cultural Center in Mexico, Roots And Wisdom produced this CD as one of the major works inspired by the cultural center.

EL NEGRO YANGA, is the founder of the first black town in the Americas to become free from slavery. The town is named YANGA, VERACRUZ, about halfway between Cordoba and the Port of Veracruz in Mexico.
Yanga is one of the few towns for black people in Mexico even though you barely see a black man or woman there these days. They have mostly migrated to the U.S. or have become mixed or breeded out.
By accident or destiny, Mr. Yanga's name is also well known and used in Nigerian pidgeon English to describe people who are "too proud of themselves". "You de make yanga!" people will say.

There are 13 tracks in this CD. African Djembe and hand drumer Owen Towles participated strongly in this recording both
as a player and engineer.

"Antes de que yo conoci a Mexico, yo pensaba que no habia gente negra Mexicanas. Pero ya conosco a "La Costa Chica", y ahora canto de YANGA, VERACRUZ, el primero pueblo negro libre de esclavitud en los Americas".
