IS IT UNCONSTITUTIONAL FOR NIGERIANS TO VOTE FOR A GOVERNMENT OF NATIONAL UNITY IN 2015?

Posted by: Wisdom Ogbor - Real Roots Report
Posted on: Thu, 26 Feb 2015 22:46:39 -0500

The debates, campaigns and propagandas in Nigeria’s upcoming elections are intensifying. Nigeria is poised delicately on the apex of international focus as the world waits for her to make a statement with these general elections. Should it be the incumbent president Goodluck Jonathan, or the ex military leader Muhamadu Buhari who emerges as the next executive in charge in Nigeria? How are Nigerians going to welcome the news of the winner, when it is all fought and done? .

Nigerians have not decided anything yet. The opposition candidate Muhamadu Buhari, was recently in London campaigning with a giant logo of Chatham House behind him, where he outlined his vision for Nigeria. His opponent President Goodluck Jonathan, has been revitalized too, fighting his battles harder, against all odds. .

There is no doubt these two patriotic Nigerians are honest in their zeal and quests to effect something good for their country. That must be something good for the citizenry, right? Right! So everyone should be down with it, not so? .

Well, that is the problem that is mixing up with all these political campaigns. Everyone’s idea of what is good for Nigeria is different, from candidate to candidate, from party to party. But how is something that is supposed to be good for everyone, be so hard to be identified, followed, and implemented? .

There is no doubt the incumbent president has done his best, building roads and infrastructures, and solving problems. It is good too, that the ex General wants to wipe out terrorism and control wasteful spending. But their political campaigns are casting each one of them against the other, to make them look bad for wanting to do good for their country. This seems very complicating, no? .

Ok, I asked this question during one of the heated debates in an online forum of political commenters, “Why don’t the candidates forgo this elections in favor of a government of national unity…?” That could give the masses two great deals for the price of one. .

Well, someone whose views I respected, said that it was a good idea, but it was unconstitutional. That is the paradox. How can something that is in the benefit of the people, be unconstitutional? .

There was vision to include a constitutional postponement clause for the elections, but none whatsoever to legislate for the possibility of real unity in Nigeria. Now Nigerians know, and it has shown, and it is still showing, that this is what is going to happen without unity during, and after these Nigerian elections: .

EXTORTIONISM, WITH TERRORISM.

The Boko Haram insurgency is now being seen as a ploy to force terrorism on the country, because one time in the past, Nigerian government has negotiated and paid off insurgents for peace. The sole chief executive who emerges victorious from this election will not be able to placate for peace unilaterally. It will not matter how many members of Boko Haram are killed, the killings will only harden the hatred and keep the war going underground. And if Buhari emerges as winner, and makes the attempt to placate Boko Haram with amnesty and money, Nigerians will be smart enough to tell him that evil is not rewarded. .

If Nigeria does not address the issue of her unity instead of an election now, the situation will come up again in the next elections, where only the candidates with excessive, and even illicit money, are those who will push themselves into office. But they would have dragged each other through the mud, in judgement against each others ethnicity, religion, schooling, age, as if leadership has got anything to do with only those qualities. .

IS IT UNPATRIOTIC FOR NIGERIANS TO ASK FOR A GOVERNMENT OF NATIONAL UNITY? .

Nigerians could make the statement that the world is waiting to hear, by “voting for none of the candidates”, and opting out for a government of national unity instead. Now, that can’t be unconstitutional, if the electorate shows to the people who are fighting to lead them, that the electorate has grown up enough now, and are matured to lead themselves. .

In a government of national unity, both Goodluck Jonathan and Muhamadu Buhari will have an equal opportunity to table their projects before the council of state, as it is still comprised now by all ex leaders, including themselves. These projects will be presented to all the states and local governments who will help the council to fine tune their plans. The plans will be equally executed in every nook and corner of Nigeria from the country’s treasury. This treasury that keeps tabs of all the monies that the country generates, will keep an “open” account that every Nigerian citizen will have the right to inspect if they chose to do so. .

A unity government like this will be tasked to use the resources of the country to benefit the whole sections of the Nigerian society instead of favoring only a few at the expenses of the majority. It does not matter if it is only one hundred dollars, or trillions of dollars that accumulate into the treasury, a unity government will know how to make it really beneficial for all Nigerian citizens at home and abroad. .

EASY WILL BE THE HEAD THAT WEARS THIS CROWN.

And who will be the head of this unity government? .

Well, give the leadership to someone who will not spend billions of dollars on troops of bodyguards and armament just to drive through traffic to go to work. Even, let this unity chief executive position be given to the current maid or cook, of any of the current presidential candidates. All the leader of government will have to do, is to travel around the country constantly, to inspect and recommend if projects have been executed, or not. If you want to have them smarter, then assign the co presidency on a yearly basis to the senior prefects of the best Government Secondary schools in each of the states. .

The council of State, respected and honorable statesmen and women will advice the nation. Jonathan and Buhari will be the watchdogs, and the people will govern themselves. .

WHY EDWARD SNOWDEN DID NOT REVEAL ANY IMPORTANT AMERICAN SECRETS, FROM THE POINT OF VIEW OF AN AFRICAN IMMIGRANT IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.

Posted by: Wisdom Ogbor - Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Mexico
Posted on: Wed, 25 Feb 2015 05:52:00 -0500

The Oscar awards in the U.S.A. has recently joined the great multitude of people around the world, who are rolling over each other to idolize America’s newest whistle blower, Edward Snowden, for revealing “secrets” of the modus operandi of the American government, which was supposedly unknown to it’s citizens for all this while. For all these people to have been surprised that America operates in the way that Snowden has revealed to them, proves the great ignorance that exists in the American society, depending on if you were born in America, or if you came to live there, after having done some living somewhere else, with a different mentality. .

As a Nigerian who migrated to the United States of America in my teens, I was received by the African communities in the different cities where I have lived in the USA, with certain cautious counsels about how to adapt in our new society. During that time, the caller ID had not been invented, so top on the list of things to approach with extreme caution, was the telephone. We were warned to always assume that someone else was always listening in to our phone conversations. As such, we had to be careful who we called, and what we said. We had to be extremely careful of America’s several law enforcement and social agencies, because they were the spies and the enforcers for the government, even though they profess to be working for the people. .

From all these, many new immigrants could deduce that there weren’t many aspects of the lives of the citizens of America that the government was not poking it’s nose into. Even some African Americans who were involved in civil rights and the black activist brotherhoods, also knew this all along. This was way back in the early eighties, so it was not exactly a big deal to hear Edward Snowden’s revelations recently that all these violations of privacy, wire tapings and espionage, were happening and, authorized by subsequent governments of the United States of America.

With no awe cast at the massive revelations by Edward Snowden, one is let to question the real motives, and the real forces behind the actions taken by an American citizen against it’s government, and at a very great risk. The Oscars now, and the conjugal visits with his girlfriend in his Russian hideout, are just the few side perks for Edward Snowden as his reward for what he did. And no matter how much he keeps maintaining not to be a Russian agent, Snowden has got to be more convincing than that. Moscow has not lost anything, but gained a whole lot from Edward Snowden, by agreeing to shelter him. Snowden may not have started out to be a Russian agent, but has ended up giving most of the glory of what he has done to Russia.

The whole world knows that Russia eavesdrops and violates the privacies of her citizens too. If Snowden were really to live up to his form, conscience, and character, he must be tasked to reveal to the world how the Russians effect their own espionage too. That must keep all Russian agents on the edge; in that case, Snowden’s privacy is now much more endangered in Russia than it ever was in the United States of America. Or not?

Nigeria has Survived Colonial rule, Survived a Civil War, Survived very Repressive and Brutal Military Regimes, Survived Ebola, and now this...?

Posted by: Editor - Lagos, Nigeria
Posted on: Thu, 12 Feb 2015 10:31:03 -0500

Every day from now until the newly rescheduled dates of Nigeria’s presidential elections, and government hand over, will continue to be a day of more scrutiny for Nigeria’s electoral process, and the credibility, and re-electability of the incumbent president Goodluck Ebele Jonathan. With the cancelation of the original election dates, and the assertion by President Jonathan that he was not consulted on the matter, the burden of electability has now shifted to rest solely on the incumbent president’s shoulders. This appearance, coupled with other observations of problems that have dogged this presidency, are now the dominant focus of this presidential election.

Forget about the opposition candidate, and whether he attended or graduated from high school, or not. It may eventually be true that ex General Muhammadu Buhari, the opposition candidate, only got his schooling through military trainings. But the glaring way things are shaping up now, seems like the one who actually graduated from a university, who has been governing Nigeria for over several years now, is causing more concern about his ability to govern and make a country as divisive as Nigeria to function. Many will rightfully argue that this is not the ideal candidate to be given a chance to organize another election, or go back to governing the country again.

Within this newly given six weeks to have a “perfect election”, President Goodluck Jonathan has a chance to go ahead and change the impressions created with this election postponement, and go on to actually win the election. If not, Buhari may well relax himself and try not to rock the boat.

An enlightened electorate understands that a president is elected to serve and function in Nigeria for a term of four years. Within these constitutional years, every elected president is smart enough to know that they owe the electorate a reasonable duty to govern the country and prepare it well for all constitutional obligations like holding fair and transparent elections, protecting civil rights to lives, peace, order and economic and social growth. Elementarily, these preparations are not left undone until the final weeks and days of the elected administration. To say now that the incumbent government of President Jonathan should get a pat in the back for saving this election from Boko Haram, is like saying that a pupil who has failed to submit a school work at an appointed examination, should be given a passing mark. To promote this pupil in the face of failure does not send a good message to future pupil presidents in Nigeria.

These events before these elections have portrayed President Goodluck Jonathan as a president albeit widely loved by many, a weak president. A weak president who has announced several defeats of Boko Haram in the past, even including a recent ceasefire, only to be diverting election security and logistics resources at the last moment now, to “defeat” Boko Haram again. A weak president who claims to not have been consulted about an election postponement that is now capable of derailing Nigeria’s democracy, or tempt a military takeover in the country.

That was why we ran these several articles on Nigeria’s 2015 elections in Real Roots magazine. The events shaping up in Nigeria has had the whole world media focusing on Nigeria, so why not your Real Roots News? Our assertion still remain that the real losers of this Nigeria’s elections are the majority of the poor people and street foot soldiers to the politicians, whom this election will never benefit.

Up until the postponement of the elections, it truly had seemed to us like neither Jonathan nor Buhari was looking like a loser in the election yet. But after the election postponement, and Jonathan proving to the world that he is obviously not in charge, Muhammadu Buhari may very well get his own chance to be a weak president, or give some hope back to Nigeria’s electorate and make them winners!

THE NIGERIAN PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION POSTPONED FROM FEBRUARY 14, 2015… WILL NOT NOT HOLD ON THIS DATE… WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN TO AFRICA’S LARGEST ECONOMY????? SIX WEEKS AFTER THE ELECTION IS POSTPONED, IT’S FINALLY SUNDAY MARCH 29, 2015… HERE ARE THE SURVIVORS; REAL WINNERS AND LOSERS OF NIGERIA’S 2015 ELECTIONS

IT’S SUNDAY MARCH 29, 2015… HERE ARE THE SURVIVORS; REAL WINNERS AND LOSERS OF NIGERIA’S 2015 ELECTIONS

The Nigerian government now has her battles drawn on two fronts. One front is the raging old conflict with the brutal Boko Haram, and the second front has just been drawn with protests against the postponement of Nigeria’s general elections, designed in part for time to fight Boko Harram. After surviving the partial protests that the postponement caused…

The most commented, and publicized presidential election in Nigeria’s history, will barely be twenty four hours from the closing of the last polling stations around the country on Sunday, March 29, 2015. Now Nigerians and the whole world are struggling to interpret the reports and results coming from the polls, and from the several misinformation organizations assigned to this exercise.

Unlike in the United States of America where polls of these magnitudes yield results within hours after the polls close, this election in Nigeria, so far, seems to be positioning more winners than the ones who actually stood for the contest at the polls. Polling results from remote constituencies are anything but conclusive, yet the citizenry are engaged in an exercise of accepting anyone else, other than themselves, as the losers. What about the real losers?

Unfortunately, or fortunately for them, neither the incumbent president, H.E. Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, nor his counterpart, former military dictator, Ex General Muhammadu Buhari, have so far turned out to be losers. The real losers are still lost in the euphoria of claims and counter claims, with most at drawn battle lines, while the excesses that caused their losses are yet to settle. These losers had lost even before there was an election, but had managed to allow themselves to be convinced that it was necessary to hold an election.

The losers had trained themselves to turn their eyes blind, even to the reasons why they lost. They blame it on tribe, Boko Haram, religion, money, and even supernatural powers. They have refused to see that for a winner to be possible in every chosen contest such as this, the most transparent, who has refused to lead the people to their mass deaths and destruction, and nurtures the people with the wealth and the excesses of the people; that person, is the one who victory selects. In Nigeria, as this polling results are being counted, people are still praying for this kind of victory.

What about the real winners? Exactely by design, the losers have failed to focus on the real winners, the ones who have made all the losers fight.

This election in itself, has won as a process that exposed the patterns of misrule, impunity and mismanagement of resources in Nigeria by several so called leaderships of the country since independence from Great Britain. The people who have participated in this misrule of a nation, and will never be called to order for it, are real winners here. There are also several big winners and unintended winners in the shadows, watching the poor losers suffer without solutions.

There is so much to win in Nigeria as long as every chance for good leadership fails. Other African nations like Libya with Gadaffi, rich in oil, has suffered worse fate than Nigeria to fail. But Nigeria resorts to murdering innocent women, children and civilians instead, to protect leaderships that suffer no losses to themselves or to their associates.

A Nigeria weakened with turmoil, violence and incompetence is a drain in the future, survival, and simple human rights of all the people who have really lost in this election without contesting it. This Nigeria with no future, well suits those who have invested in total control of all resources to the benefit of only a few, to contest elections with excessive money that never empowers the masses with basic improvement in living standards.

Wouldn’t it have been better that all the money spent and bribed in this election were directly invested for the hands-on needs of the masses? Now the people must suffer more and wait while the politicians recoup all their election expenses first, before the nation gets a chance at a fair record. This was not what was intended in democracy. This is, dem-don-crazy, for the winners and losers!!!

MY 2014 IN MY OWN RETROSPECT - FAMILY, REAL ROOTS MAGAZINE & ROOTS AND WISDOM MUSIC

Posted by: Wisdom Ogbor - Asaba, Nigeria
Posted on: Mon, 09 Feb 2015 00:46:09 -0500

Here is a look back at the year 2014 through the perspective of Real Roots Magazine, and Roots And Wisdom Music. The events that transpired in this memorable year can be described as nothing short of shocking, surprising, and an eventual revelation of growth and a new awakening for some projects initiated by Roots And Wisdom music, Real Roots magazine or their affiliates for as long as more than twenty years ago.

Towards the end of 2013, it was already evident that the cultural crusade of Roots And Wisdom music in the Americas had climbed and reached an apex that had accrued over a long period. The seeds of African culture planted among the music loving communities in Mexico yielded fruit, spreading with the emergence of Mexican musicians and bands playing their own brands of reggae and African cultural music, dancing, and connecting with Africa even as many Africans are disconnecting with their own roots. This inter cultural growth allowed that in early 2014, an international cultural center was founded and launched with the name of “Africa Fe” in the Mayan town of Felipe Carrillo Puerto in Quintana Roo, Mexico.

Immediately following the launching of the cultural center, several consecutive shocking incidents resulted in increased and suspended amount of activities for the center as 2014 struggled on. The first shock was the loss of a young musical collaborator at Africa Fe who had played memorable music and roles, and had inspired many at the cultural center. Following this, came the death of my mother who had been struggling with her health. My father followed my mother to heaven two months later, and for those reasons, Africa conspired and took me away to Nigeria for an eye-opening experience and a reconnect to all the roots that had perpetually pushed me on, to sing their songs and talk about them.

This “reconnect” has resurrected the dominant projects of Roots And Wisdom music, which had seemed to be lagging. The “Akwukwu-Igbo Cultural Trust” (ACT), has now recruited young talented individuals to work with in producing artistic works focused on the experiences of the ones at home, whose stories are hardly told.

Watch out for these stories and many more in 2015 from Roots And Wisdom Music, Real Roots Magazine, and all their affiliates and artists. Help us to tell these stories to the world, now from your own point of view in Nigeria, West Africa. HAPPY 2015!!!
